Pre Christmas emergency - Internet outage
When you get a call that cannot wait - Internet, network and wifi outage
On 21st Dec I received a call from a panicking bar manager with no internet connection, resulting in no tills, pdq’s, wifi etc, and unable to trade.
Within a couple of hours I was able to visit the site and start to troubleshoot.
Intermittent DHCP issues, no internet.
The Meraki gateway was up and connected, confirmed by its webgui status.
It’s not clear who manages that device, but it’s working.
Someone had been playing with cables, some things were not connected right, so we made good and got things working, albeit the network was slow.
This got them through the 21st and onto Christmas.
I revisited today to investigate more and work on tidying things up, all whilst they continued to trade. No downtime allowed.
Netgear switch and a Planet switch, but little activity across them.
We pulled the Fritzbox, it is not doing anything. It may have been there for ADSL failover, but there is no active ADSL line now.
6 Ubiquiti Access points found on the network. 5 physically located, the 6th remains a mystery for now.
TVs connected using HDMI over ethernet.
The Netgear switch had some dead ports, and the planet switch was overheating.
A Ubiquiti 24 port POE Gen 1 (yes still have some) installed and running.
The Meraki gateway moved into the cabinet, along with Virgin ISP Cisco router.
Yellow cables for Ubiquiti Access points
Black cables for wired Point of Sale
Purple HDMI over ethernet for TVS
Orange WAN connections
Red link from router to switch
All unused links removed for now…
I need to route the purple cables better but as TVs were in use, football and darts this will have to be a return visit when we can take them down for an hour.
Moved things around in the cabinet as I could without turning everything off, and got things situated on shelves.
The Hikvision CCTV is completely separate and everything links back to the NVRs.
Network is stable and everything adopted to Ubiquiti self hosted network app.
Guest network 10Mbps/10Mbps limited
Staff network 50Mbps/50Mbps limited
Wired Staff network unlimited
Virgin connection is 300Mbps line so plenty of bandwidth.
I will monitor now and tweak as needed
