A Cotswolds based company approached me to review their network following connectivity issues.
Audits of switches show various faults. A couple of switches keep overheating, one no longer has POE provision (likely power supply), and one will drop its config every time there is a power outage.
Now this is a large network with quite a complex setup.
We hedged a plan to work out of hours to replace one switch at a time, whilst documenting each port, checking the config required on that port, physically checking the other end to ensure the config is appropriate for the connected devices.
A lengthy process which is underway as I replace switch by switch.
Along the way it was getting difficult with long cables, so I have now replaced most (there are few hanging here which need further checks on the devices the other end) of them with shorter leads even to existing switches just to make life easier.
The project will continue in a couple of weeks to finish replacing the remaining switches.
From there a full spec and plan will be provided to the client detailing each connection, and a map of all ports along with config. This audit will help the way the network is managed.
