The original link showed signs of signal loss and fluctuating throughput, particularly during periods of higher demand. Signal strength hovered around -80 dBm, well below the optimal range. After a structured realignment process, we improved this to -60 dBm. As a result, throughput increased by over 50 percent, and retransmissions dropped significantly.

This improvement came from two key actions. First, we physically adjusted the devices to ensure they were correctly aligned, using the built-in signal strength tool and monitoring in real time. Second, we cleared the line of sight between devices, removing small obstructions including overgrown branches. The firmware was also updated, and we reviewed channel width and frequency to minimise local interference. These steps, taken together, restored the link’s stability and performance.

Rather than replacing the hardware, this case shows the value of reviewing setup and alignment when using directional wireless equipment. A short technical review and minor adjustments can extend the lifespan of older devices like the NanoStation Loco M5, offering a reliable and cost-effective solution for improving connectivity.

We started with a detailed site survey. This included walking the entire warehouse, mapping the floorplan, and identifying signal obstacles like high metal racking, concrete walls, and machinery. We used heat-mapping tools to model the signal spread, focusing on aisle coverage where handheld scanners and picking systems would be in constant use. One thing we learned early on is WiFi behaves very differently in warehouses compared to office spaces.

With the survey complete, we planned the network around three cabinets to spread risk and reduce cable runs. Each cabinet housed switches and access point uplinks serving its nearest area, cutting down latency and improving resilience in case of faults. We installed eight managed PoE switches across the cabinets, giving us plenty of ports for the 37 access points, scanners, office devices, and future hardware.

Access point placement was key. We positioned them high on ceiling beams, angled directly down aisles to maximise signal strength along the main working areas. We avoided placing them across aisles, where the metal shelving would kill signal strength side-to-side. Loading bays and packing areas had their own dedicated access points, including outdoor-rated units where required.

Once everything was installed, we spent time testing signal strength in both empty and fully stocked conditions. We adjusted power levels, channel planning, and VLAN setup to make sure operational traffic stayed fast and stable, with guest WiFi isolated to the office block.

With three cabinets, eight switches, and 37 access points properly configured, the warehouse now has full coverage, no dead spots in key working areas, and capacity for growth without expensive rewiring. The upfront planning meant we avoided common pitfalls and delivered a network that just works, day in and day out.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is preparing to sell approximately five billion pounds of Bitcoin seized from criminals in a major 2018 fraud investigation. The government is setting up a formal process to safely handle and sell these assets, aiming to ease short-term pressures on public finances.

This mirrors decisions taken in Swindon, where Labour leader Jim Robbins has authorised the sale of council land and buildings to help cover budget shortfalls. In both cases, asset sales are being used to bring in quick funds without raising taxes or reducing public services in the immediate term.

2. Will this make any real financial difference?

In terms of raw cash, the Bitcoin sale will provide a significant amount. However, it is unlikely to change the broader financial picture. The United Kingdom borrows around three hundred billion pounds a year, meaning five billion pounds will cover only a small fraction of annual borrowing.

Swindon has faced similar issues. Selling land and property may ease short-term pressures but has not resolved the council’s continued overspend on services. At the national level, the Bitcoin proceeds will be treated as a one-off sum and cannot be used to meet the regular costs of services like schools, hospitals, and local councils. While it may buy time, it does not offer a long-term answer.

3. Is this a smart political move or a distraction?

Politically, selling seized criminal assets is likely to be popular, especially as it avoids immediate tax rises. The government will be able to show action and responsibility, just as Labour in Swindon has used land sales to balance the budget without cutting local services.

However, both approaches come with risks. Legal claims from fraud victims and foreign governments could delay or reduce the final amount of money raised. Swindon’s asset sales have already faced legal complexities, delays in completion, and questions over whether the public received good value. These cases show that asset sales can offer short-term gain but raise serious questions about longer-term financial stability.

4. What do independent experts say?

Independent economist Julian Jessop has said that while selling Bitcoin is understandable, it does not solve the government’s wider financial pressures. He has advised that a slow, careful sale is more likely to protect value and avoid risks associated with rushed decisions.

Locally, similar concerns have been raised about Swindon’s sales. Quick disposals may bring in cash but have done little to tackle the council’s growing financial pressures. The lesson is clear: asset sales should be handled with care and should not be mistaken for a complete financial strategy.

5. What should the public be aware of?

The public should understand that this sale will not remove the need for difficult financial decisions. Like Swindon’s land sales, the Bitcoin sale offers a short-term fix but leaves underlying spending pressures in place.

There are important questions that should be asked. Will legal action reduce the money recovered? Will the government take time to secure the best value or rush to raise money quickly? Most importantly, is there a plan in place to deal with the regular overspend or will this sale simply delay further decisions?

6. Summary

Selling Bitcoin is a practical way to convert seized assets into public funds. If done properly, it can help meet immediate financial needs. However, it does not address the ongoing pressures in the public finances, just as selling council land has failed to resolve Swindon’s continued overspend.

The public should be asking clear questions about how this money will be used, how it will be protected from legal claims, and what steps the government is taking to get spending under control. Without clear answers, the sale risks becoming another temporary fix instead of a meaningful step towards financial stability.

The original plans, submitted between 2018 and 2020, included designated green spaces and play areas as part of the wider housing development. These formed part of the information available to prospective buyers, many of whom purchased homes on the understanding that these amenities would be delivered as shown.

At Tuesday’s planning meeting, the developers sought permission to revise these plans. The proposal was carried, meaning the final delivery of open spaces and play equipment will differ from what was originally agreed.

As a local councillor and a mum of three, I can’t support this decision. Like many families in North Swindon, I moved here based on what the developers promised. The play areas and green spaces were part of that offer. Changing them after homes have been sold is simply not fair. It risks devaluing homes and undermines confidence in the planning process.

You wouldn’t accept moving into a home only to find the doors and windows missing if they were shown in the plans. So why should downgraded open spaces and play areas be treated any differently?

Local Conservative borough councillors Cllr Jake Chandler - St Andrews and St Andrews Daniel Adams. spoke against the revised plans ensuring material planning considerations were the focus of the decision, stating they believed the original commitments should be upheld. Vinay Manro, Alex Hughes and I have also confirmed we would not have supported the proposed changes, because residents deserve to get what they were promised.

The Planning Committee has made several key decisions affecting the future of the Oasis Leisure Centre and surrounding North Star area. Below is a summary of each application and its outcome.

➡️ Item 6 – Oasis Leisure Centre Redevelopment (S/24/1431)

✅ Approved

• Demolition of the dry side and removal of the existing sports hall

• Proposed additions include a new gym, café, reception area, bowling alley, mini-golf, and external water slides

• An extra floor added to the link building

• Two new multi-use games areas and updated parking provision

• Sport England submitted a formal objection due to the loss of the sports hall, highlighting its importance to Swindon’s indoor sports provision

• The Council concluded that the sports hall is not currently in use and therefore not included in the borough’s sports modelling data

• The applicant, Seven Capital, stated that a new sports hall is not commercially viable within the proposed scheme

➡️ Item 7 – Listed Building Works to Oasis Dome (S/LBC/25/0182)

✅ Approved

• Refurbishment of the Grade II listed dome

• Removal of internal features including outdated slides and diving pool

• Introduction of a revised pool layout and aqua play areas

• Re-covering of the dome using modern ETFE material designed to reflect the original curved structure

• Retention of key original features including the lagoon pool, splash wall, and lifeguard post

• I am glad a solution has been found to re-cover the dome with materials that respect and retain the original design

➡️ Item 8 – Employment Use and Data Centres (S/OUT/24/1427)

✅ Approved

• Outline permission for up to 77,855 square metres of employment space, including data centres and warehousing

• Buildings permitted up to a height of 24 metres

• The site is located on the former Claire’s Accessories factory land

• Earlier versions of local plans identified this land for housing with no commercial use proposed

• This approval introduces large-scale employment use into the area and can now move forward to detailed design

➡️ Item 9 – Residential Development (S/OUT/24/1426)

❌ Rejected

• Outline application for up to 707 flats, with 240 parking spaces

• The proposal included ground floor commercial or community space and a central plaza

• Concerns raised included development density, insufficient parking, and pressure on local infrastructure

• Previous development plans proposed lower density housing on the former Claire’s site, not on land next to the Oasis

➡️ Next steps

These four applications are closely connected as part of the wider regeneration of the site. Each application must be assessed on its own planning merits, but the outcome of one can affect the delivery of others.

In my view, the applications were considered in the wrong order. The residential development was expected to help fund the refurbishment of the Oasis. That proposal has been refused.

Meanwhile, the employment use application has been approved and can proceed. However, the data centre and warehouse development is unlikely to bring the level of funding needed to restore the Oasis on its own.

As it stands, the commercial development may go ahead while the Oasis remains closed.

I will be closely monitoring progress, will follow Swindon Borough Council plans, Save Oasis, Sports England and Swindon & Wiltshire Canal Trust comments.

That day changed everything.

Five years have passed. Life looks very different now. Some changes have been painful. Others have brought new purpose. And there’s still more to come.

On our toughest days, it’s thinking of our children that gives us the strength to keep going. Sareena and Ariya give me that strength every single day.

The world is changing fast. The country is struggling. People feel unheard and unsure of what’s next.

But what stays with me isn’t fear of what’s happened to me. It’s fear of what might happen to my daughters. It’s leaving them in a world that may not protect them or even try to understand them.

They deserve better. Every child does.

In April, 55,000 people were taken off payrolls. Early data for May shows another 109,000 gone. That is the biggest drop since the pandemic. One clear reason stands out. Labour raised National Insurance for employers. This made it more expensive to keep staff. Many businesses have had no choice but to reduce hours or cut jobs.

Wage growth is slowing too. Regular pay is rising by just 5.2 percent, which is less than before. But when you factor in rising costs and frozen tax thresholds, people are taking home less.

Unemployment has climbed to 4.6 percent. That is nearly 1.6 million people out of work. Job vacancies are also falling, so getting back into work is harder.

The Government promised to put more money in people’s pockets. These figures suggest the opposite. Small businesses are under pressure. Staff are being let go. Households are feeling the strain.

I will write to Swindon Borough Council and ask what steps are being taken to support our local economy. I want to be sure Haydon Wick and Priory Vale are not left to pick up the pieces.
